How to launch a supplement brand in Poland

Poland is one of the largest supplement markets in Central Europe, but it plays by its own rules. Here is the order in which we take a brand through market entry - from the first question to the first shipped order.

Short answer

To launch a supplement brand in Poland, you need to size the category and the competition, confirm the status of your ingredients and doses, prepare a Polish-language label that uses only permitted health claims, file a GIS notification before the first sale, build a supply chain with a warehouse registered with the sanitary inspection (Sanepid), and only then open your sales channels.

Start with data, not with translating your label

The most common mistake foreign brands make is assuming that a product that sells well in Germany or the UK will sell the same way in Poland. Sometimes it does. More often the category looks different: other formats are popular, other price points are accepted, and the shelf is already held by strong local brands.

Before you spend budget on anything else, answer four questions:

  • How big is your category, and is it growing or shrinking.
  • Who is selling in it, in what format and at what price point.
  • Where the gap is - price, format, dose, target audience.
  • Whether your product meets Polish and EU requirements as it is, or needs changes.

These are exactly the questions a market entry report answers. It is the cheapest moment to find out that something needs to change.

Check the status of your ingredients and doses

Food supplements in the European Union follow common rules, but some areas are still regulated by each country separately - including maximum doses of certain vitamins and minerals and the permissibility of some botanical substances. A product that is legal in one EU country may need changes in another.

We check three things:

  • Whether every ingredient can be used in a supplement - including whether it is a novel food that requires authorisation.
  • Whether the doses fall within Polish practice for the substance in question.
  • Whether the product format - capsules, gummies, powder, drops - changes its legal classification.

Prepare a Polish label

The label must be in Polish and meet both the general rules on food information to consumers and the specific rules for food supplements. Health claims cause the most trouble - wording that sounds natural in your home market may not be permitted in the EU if it is not in the EU register.

The full list of mandatory elements is in our food supplement label checklist.

File the GIS notification before the first sale

A food supplement placed on the Polish market for the first time requires a notification to the Chief Sanitary Inspector (GIS). A draft of the Polish label is attached to the notification. The notification is filed by the food business operator placing the product on the market - which is why the entry structure described below matters from day one.

After the notification is filed, GIS may open an explanatory procedure if it has doubts about the product's composition or classification. Well-prepared documentation reduces that risk.

Decide who formally places the product on the market

A brand from another EU country can often operate without setting up a Polish company. A brand from outside the EU usually needs a responsible entity within the EU - an importer or a representative. This decision determines who files the notification, whose address goes on the label and who answers to the sanitary inspection.

We always make this decision together with a law firm specialising in food law, because it depends on the country of origin, the sales model and your plans for the years ahead.

Build the supply chain

The product has to physically reach Poland and then the customer. In most cases that means one of two models: importing a finished product that already carries a Polish label, or relabelling, repacking or manufacturing locally. A warehouse that stores food must be entered in the register of the competent sanitary inspector and, for some activities, also approved by that inspector.

We cover how to choose each link in our article on the supply chain for a foreign supplement brand.

Open your sales channels and launch

  1. Pick your first channel. One channel run well delivers more than three launched at once.
  2. Prepare content in Polish. Not a translation, but messaging written for Polish customers and Polish buying habits.
  3. Build trust. First reviews, creator partnerships and product samples do more than advertising without social proof.
  4. Measure from day one. Customer acquisition cost and repeat purchase rate will tell you whether to scale or adjust.

Frequently asked questions

Does a foreign supplement brand need a Polish company?
Not always. EU brands can often sell without a new company, while brands from outside the EU usually need a responsible entity within the EU. The right structure is agreed with a law firm at the start of the project.
Can a supplement approved in another EU country be sold in Poland unchanged?
Not always. Common EU rules cover areas such as health claims and labelling, but some matters, like maximum doses of certain ingredients, are regulated by each country. The label must also be in Polish, and the product requires a GIS notification.
Where should I start when entering the Polish market?
With a market assessment: category size, competition, pricing and the requirements for your specific product. It is the cheapest moment to make changes, before the label, the production order and the marketing budget exist.
Who files the GIS notification for a supplement from abroad?
The food business operator placing the product on the market in Poland. Who that is depends on the entry structure you choose - which is why this decision is made at the very beginning.
